The carry-over-problem in kraft recovery boilers is studied in order to find new ways of minimizing the amount of carry-over in practice.By combining results from field measurements, 3D-simulation of droplet trajectories, laboratory studies, and advanced chemical modeling, the influence of recovery boiler operation and black liquor quality on the formation of carry-over is clarified. The sintering tendency of synthetic carry-over particles are determined in gases containing SO2, CO2, HCl, and H2O.The chemical reactions of carry-over particles in the flue gas channel are studied by multiphase/multicomponent non-ideal modeling. The amount of carry-over particles entering the superheater region is determined by 3D-flow calculations. The boiler design used is the same as in the boiler where field measurements are done. This part is done at the Department of Heat Engineering and Furnaces at KTH.In measurements, the amount of carry-over particles are measured at the entrance to the superheater region in one kraft recovery boiler.A specially designed air/water cooled probe can monitor the carry-over amount at different points in the cross-section of the upper furnace.Flue gas temperature and flow is determined in each point. Also, chemical analysis of the probe samples are made.
