Amnesty International, which fights for human rights, is a one-interest movement that pays attention to human rights violations in various parts of the world. The basic ideology of the organization is based on the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and international human rights conventions modifying the UN Declaration. From Amnesty Internationals point of view, the most important convention is the 1976 Convention on Civil and Political Rights where the objectives expressed in the human rights Declaration are given a legal commitment. The author reports on the situation in Chile from 1969 onwards. BIBLIOGRAPHIC LEVEL: monograph Development aid and human rights / Tomasevski, Katarina, XVI, 208 p.. - London : Printed publ.(D), 1989. ISBN 0861877365 LANGUAGE: ENG ABSTRACT: This book tries to raise human rights issues from the margins of development aid to its mainstream.Hence the book discusses the human rights imlications of the economic and social politics which promoted and supported through aid. Ultimately, it suggests that a human rights impact assessment should be applied to the entire development aid. The book consists of the following parts: Part I: The promise: human rights in donors' politics. Part II: The practice: sanctions versus promotion. Part III: Components of the linkage. The message of this book is that human rights should be applied throughout development aid, not only used to evaluate yhe performance of the recipient governments. It argues that all the governments -donors included- are bowed by international human rights law.
